With the countdown to the new season standing at three days, Sporting Life covers the news that the RFL have scapped the ruling allowing officials to take control of matches involving their hometown clubs.
It may be a lack of caring or ignorance that the news
hasn’t been picked up elsewhere, and the change in the law is likely to have any noticable effect on any official other than Steve Ganson who, despite being heralded as one of the sport’s best refs, has been prevented from officiating finals involving his hometown club St Helens.
RFL Chief Executive Nigel Wood has used words such as “professionalism” and “modernisation” to justify the decision. Personally, there is a real indifference to the decision, but the RFL have set themselves up for a fall - being unable to benefit from the change and having the noose tightened if an incident like this occurs in a Ganson officiated St Helens game.
